Collective Entrainment and Confinement Amplify Transport by Schooling Microswimmers

نویسندگان

چکیده

Micro-swimmers can serve as cargo carriers that move deep inside complex flow networks. When a school collectively entrains the surrounding fluid, their transport capacity be enhanced. This effect is quantified with good agreement between experiments self-propelled droplets and confined Brinkman squirmer model. The volume of liquid entrained much larger than droplet itself, amplifying effective over an order magnitude, even for dilute schools. Hence, biological engineered swimmers efficiently materials into environments.

Collective States, Multistability and Transitional Behavior in Schooling Fish

The spontaneous emergence of pattern formation is ubiquitous in nature, often arising as a collective phenomenon from interactions among a large number of individual constituents or sub-systems. Understanding, and controlling, collective behavior is dependent on determining the low-level dynamical principles from which spatial and temporal patterns emerge; a key question is whether different gr...

Entrainment, Displacement and Transport of Tracer Gravels

The mass and size distribution of grain entrainment per unit bed area may be measured by replacing a volume of the bed with tracer gravels and observing the mass difference before and after a transport event. This measure of spatial entrainment is relevant to any process involving size-selective exchange of sediment between transport and bed and may be directly used in calculations of sediment ...

Physics of microswimmers--single particle motion and collective behavior: a review.

Locomotion and transport of microorganisms in fluids is an essential aspect of life. Search for food, orientation toward light, spreading of off-spring, and the formation of colonies are only possible due to locomotion. Swimming at the microscale occurs at low Reynolds numbers, where fluid friction and viscosity dominates over inertia. Here, evolution achieved propulsion mechanisms, which overc...

Fluid mixing by curved trajectories of microswimmers.

We consider the tracer diffusion D(rr) that arises from the run-and-tumble motion of low Reynolds number swimmers, such as bacteria. Assuming a dilute suspension, where the bacteria move in uncorrelated runs of length λ, we obtain an exact expression for D(rr) for dipolar swimmers in three dimensions, hence explaining the surprising result that this is independent of λ. We compare D(rr) to the ...
